Taking the first step in your orthodontic journey is a big decision, and we want to ensure that you feel confident in our care throughout the treatment process. That begins with your initial consultation in our Highland or Ramsey office!

We believe that this first visit is one of the most important ones you will have. It is our chance to meet and get to know each other a little better as we talk about the concerns you have. We want this to be a positive and stress-free experience for you, so let’s go over what you can expect from your complimentary consultation.

A warm welcome

Whether you choose our Highland or Ramsey office, you will be greeted with a smile! We will give you a brief tour of the office and introduce you to some of our talented team before going over your medical and dental history. We will then take a few digital photographs for our records, and in addition will take an i-CAT 3D scan to determine your orthodontic needs.

At this point, Dr. Van Vliet will perform an oral examination. While examining your teeth, gums, and mouth, he may also ask if you have had any problems with chewing, swallowing, or opening and closing your mouth. The information that we obtain from your history, exam, and images is what allows Dr. Van Vliet to make an initial diagnosis and recommend the best course of treatment for you.

We do not want you to feel like we are rushing you through any appointments, especially your very first one! For that reason, you can expect it to last a little longer than most visits. Most consultations will take about an hour, as we take time to discuss your diagnosis, the orthodontic process itself, and address any questions or concerns you may have at this point. You can expect to cover topics like:

• any oral issues you are experiencing
• if treatment is needed immediately or if waiting is recommended
• what treatment options are available to correct the problem
• an estimate of how long we expect your treatment to take
• the total investment required for treatment
• any payment or financing options we have available to you

The next steps in your orthodontic journey

After you have decided on a treatment plan with Dr. Van Vliet, we will schedule an appointment for you to start the active phase of treatment.

Depending on the type of treatment, follow-up visits will be every 4-8 weeks or so. During these check-ups, Dr. Van Vliet will examine you and assess your progress.

These visits are a critical part of the treatment process, so it is important that you do not miss them. While we do our best to schedule your appointments for a day and time that is convenient for you, we understand that sometimes life gets in the way! If you are running late or cannot make your appointment for any reason, just let us know as soon as possible so we can reschedule your appointment for another day. This will help keep your treatment plan progressing as it should be.
